Heriot-Watt University has its main campus in Edinburgh in a beautiful setting of 380 acres of parkland. School of Social Sciences

The School of Social Sciences comprises of:

  • Edinburgh Business School
  • The Department of Languages and Intercultural studies
  • Department of Psychology

The Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies specializes in the fields translating and interpreting studies and intercultural studies such as living cultural heritage, language policy and intercultural communication. Facilities available for language learning and translation and interpretation includes four fully-equipped interpreting teaching labs; two language laboratories; self-study laboratory; computer labs; audio-visual teaching equipment; facilities for closed-circuit television; satellite broadcasting reception; recording studio and a special collection of monolingual and multilingual dictionaries, covering a wide range of specialised subjects, is located in the Dictionaries Room in the University Library. The Department works closely with SCIC, the Directorate-General for Interpretation of the European Commission. The Department is one of only four UK university departments that have been granted membership of CIUTI. The Department is also a Higher Education Language Partner with the UK Chartered Institute of Linguists. Heriot-Watt is a member of the EMT network, the European Master’s in Translation network. Heriot-Watt University is ranked 2nd in Scotland and top 10 in the UK for Languages and Intercultural studies with 92% student satisfaction, according to National Student Survey 2019.

Edinburgh Business School offers various subjects including

Edinburgh Business School has Centre for Networks and Enterprise Excellence (CNEE) which holds two labs including Operational Excellence Lab and Network Science Lab. Operational Excellence Lab is used for the task of developing research on emerging themes in Operational Excellence and Network Science Lab is a Scientific Frontier which is a platform for the researchers to expand the networks for new opportunities. Research Centre for Social and Economic Data Analytics (CSEDA) has four focused research groupings namely:

The Marketing department of Edinburgh Business School was ranked best in Scotland, according to the National Student Survey 2020.

School of Textiles and Design

The school offers courses in six categories including:

The School has the largest knit, weave and print studios in an academic setting. Students have access to fully equipped clothing workshops, spacious studios with individual work space, technical workshops and laboratories, state-of-the-art production equipment and computer aided design (CAD) suites.

The Fashion Technology programme offers an integrated work placement which provides students with invaluable industry experience. Industry placement partnership includes Adidas, Nike, Christopher Kane, Pauline Van Dongen, Iris Van Herpen, ASOS, Cooper & Stollbrand, Tommy Hilfiger, Teatum Jones, Kalopsia, Traake and Paul Smith.

Fashion programme offers internships and placements with Christopher Kane, Alexander McQueen, Philip Treacy, Ann Demeulemeester, Sophie Hulme, Gareth Pugh, Nicole Farhi, Vivienne Westwood, Dazed and Confused, Paul Smith, M&S, The Kooples.

School of Textiles and Design works in collaboration with Royal Academy of Engineering, School of energy, Geosciences, Infrastructure and Society is one of the four recognised Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design in the UK.

School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society

This School provides a collaborative research and teaching environment organised into six institutes namely:

  • The Institute of Sustainable Building Design (ISBD)
  • The Institute for Infrastructure and Environment (IIE)
  • The Institute of Life and Earth Sciences (ILES)
  • The Institute of GeoEnergy Engineering (IGE)
  • Institute for Social Policy, Housing, Equalities Research (I-SPHERE)
  • The Urban Institute (TUI)

And a specialised arm of the Institute of Life and Earth Sciences is the International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT). The school offers UG courses in the following subject areas:

The School of EGIS has a record of successful partnership working with the private and public sector in Scotland; promotes links with small and medium-sized enterprises. According to The UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) of 2014, The university is ranked 9th in the UK and 1st in Scotland for research impact with 90% of overall research activity in General Engineering and 70% of overall research activity in Architecture, Built Environment and Planning confirmed as world-leading or internationally excellent.

School of Engineering and Physical Sciences

The School of Engineering and Physical Sciences offers a wide range of courses under six departments namely:

Chemistry programmes allow a period of overseas study at universities in many countries including Australia, North America, Spain, Germany or France. All the Chemistry programmes are accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry. According to The National Student Survey 2018, The School of Engineering and Physical Science in Heriot-Watt is ranked number 1 in Scotland for Chemistry.

The Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering offers a variety of UG courses, however the specialities include Microsystems, Robotics, Intelligent Systems, Signal and Image Processing, Embedded Systems, Power Electronics and High Voltage engineering are uniquely applied internationally across industries such as Communications, Medical Electronics, Transport, Offshore Oil and Gas, Defence, Energy Generation/Distribution and beyond. The School of Maths and Computer Sciences comprises of three departments namely:

The School hosts the Actuarial Research Centre, coordinating the network of actuarial researchers affiliated with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. It is a key partner in the Edinburgh Robotics Centre, at the forefront of research in robotics worldwide and is an integral part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences which is one of the largest and most successful mathematical research institutes in the UK. All the programmes in the Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics are accredited by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and the full suite of UG programmes are accredited by the UK Actuarial Profession and most of the Computer programmes are accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS).
